Varsity Track – State Meet

The Covenant Academy Varsity Track and Field team ended the year with an outstanding State meet.  The girl's finished fourth out of 12 schools that competed and the boys finished second out of 16, only 7 points behind Westwood.  While everyone competed hard there were a few athletes that held the spotlight throughout the entire meet.  The girls were a constant threat with Taylor Kasey finishing second in the 100 meter dash and dominating the field with a first place finish in the 200 and 400 meter dashes.  Taylor was the anchor leg on the state record setting 4x400 meter relay team along with Abby Greene, Mallory Merritt, and Victoria Coppage. Taylor finished second for the girls in high points for the meet. Taylor was not the only standout among the girls.  The high point winner for the meet was Victoria Coppage setting a state record in every event that she ran.  There was no competition for the eighth grader as she placed first in the 3200, 1600 and 800 meter runs. Victoria is in a league of her own when it comes to distance runners. Not to be outdone by the girls, the boys held their own at the state meet. Sam Ashmore was seventh in high points out of the entire meet placing well in the 300 and 100 meter hurdles and participating as the leading leg of the 4X400 meter relay team that placed first.  Stephen Howard was third in the state for the high point award with a fifth place finish in the long jump, and first in the High and Triple jump.  Stephen was the anchor leg on the first place 4x400 meter relay team along with Gunnar Mendiola and Andretti Loyd.  The boys had an outstanding season and we are looking forward to another great season from our Covenant Rams in the future.

Junior Varsity

The Junior Varsity Boys and Girls Track team did an outstanding job at Stratford.  Both teams placed well against the three other teams that were there that day.  Andrew Swicegood ran a personal best 800 meter time placing first in that event as well as the mile.  Victoria Coppage would not let Andrew show her up on the distance placing first in the 800 and 1600m as well.   But it wasn’t only the distance runners that crossed the line first on Thursday.  Hope Wheeler finished first in the 55 meter hurdles while Mallory Merritt ran a best time in the 400 meter run, also finishing first.  While everyone was tired at the end of the day, smiles were on everyone’s faces because of a job well done.
